Sadly our gig on Sunday 3rd March at the Truck Bar in Brookvale has been cancelled due to a double booking. It seems that the NRL Las Vegas matches are on and people will be concentrating on those and not listening to music. For those of you who want to watch:NRL Las Vegas

Every year Springwood has the Springwood Spring Festival in September with music, food, plants and other stalls. Always a great day. It used to be Springwood Foundation Day but that was stopped during covid and reanimated as the Springwood Spring Festival. If all goes well Dan's Diner will be on at 12 noon. We had to cancel last year as Dave caught covid a few days before.Posted 1st July 2023
We have a gig at a new venue for us, Bootlegger Bar Katoomba on Saturday 8th July. The is a restaurant/bar and the entertainment starts when the meals finish. We would suggest making a booking and indicating that you want to see the band. The food sounds very exciting with the venue describing it as "taking inspiration from Southern BBQ and Cajan cuisines". Sounds hot which is probably not a description of Katoomba on a winter night but Bootleggers has the heating well under control. I was up there last week and it was very pleasant.Posted 11th June 2023
We're back at Miss Celie's next Saturday 17th June. It's a great venue with excellent food and much better with the new room open and a stage to play on. It's also an afternoon gig so you can move on to other evening events afterwards.Saturday 10th June at the Truck Bar
Another excellent night for us in Brookvale with lots of people. The night was a bit chilly but with plenty of heaters hppening it wasn't too bad at all.Posted 23rd May 2023
The next gig is now Saturday 10th June 2023 at the Truckbar @ 4 Pines Brewing Co, 4F/9-13 Winbourne Rd, Brookvale between 7:00 and 10:00pm. I have previously mentioned how amazing this gig is but it is worth repeating. Normally we play on a stage backed by walls but here huge beer vats are behind us and it is like playing in a metal forest.Below are pictures from an earlier gig.
Garry Owen Hotel 28th May 2023 CANCELLED
Sadly, we discovered on the weekend that we had been double booked for this gig and thus was our performance cancelled. We will get another gig there down the track but as yet we have no date. We were so looking forward to this gig but there it is.Posted 15th May 2023
The next gig is Sunday 28th May at the fabulous Garry Owen Hotel in Rozelle: 778 Darling St to be precise. Starts at 6pm upstairs and goes to 9pm. Now I've not been there yet but Dan has and he loves it as do our friends who live in the area.Posted 29th January 2023
The next gig is Saturday 25th February 2023 at the amazing Truckbar @ 4 Pines Brewing Co, 4F/9-13 Winbourne Rd, Brookvale between 7:00 and 10:00pm. A working brewery it has huge beer vats that dwarf the band. There are pictures below from an earlier gig.Gasoline Pony 28th January 2023

Excellent afternoon at the Gasoline Pony. Lot's of people and a nice warm vibe.
We got lots of photos so here are some.

Next gig we are back at the Gasoline Pony, the friendly bar in Marrickville. 28th January at 3pm. Should be great.Miss Celie's Ashfield 14th January 2023

The day was particularly good, almost magical, where the combination of venue, music, punters and staff just clicked. The crowd was excellent and there were some events happening where friends who hadn't seen each other for years happened to be at the gig or were walking past and saw people they knew. A really great vibe. Here are a couple of pictures.
Setting up.

Dan's Diner and Dan's Diner plus Harpo.

And finally the man, Dan.

A really great day was had by all. Thanks Miss Celie.
Truck Bar 6th January 2023
Our first new year gig was at the Truck Bar, 4 Pines Brewery, Brookvale on 6th January 2023, hopefully an improvement on the year just gone.Occasionally we come across a gig that is different. And Truck Bar is one such gig.

The venue is in a factory with most of the space taken up with vats of beer. Lots of beer.

And there were lots more vats around the corner. Unfortunately our photographer couldn't make the night so we have no photos of the band in flight but here is Dan and Phil setting up on an intimate stage.

We are back at the Truck Bar on 25th February 2023.
The Merton Hotel, 12th November 2022
The Merton Hotel is a great venue with a fantastic restaurant. We played here on November 12th. Situated on Victoria Rd near the Anzac Bridge it has real charm and class. Many excellent bands play here so check it out. Here are some photos from the night. First up is our official photographer Rhonda who found herself on the other end of the camera.

And here is our leader, Brother Dan, doing what he does so well. I think Supershed is a reference to my hair

Dave "Harpo" Moor is the fabulous harp player who coincidentally seems to turn up at any gig we play.

So here is a shot of Dan's Diner plus Harpo shot across the band and out onto busy Victoria Rd. And boy was it busy. Lugging out later on in the night was a selection of car horns and swearing. So unoriginal.

And finally this is a photo of Robert McClymont and Phil Johnson. There once was a band called Stretch Limousine and Dan, Phil, Dave and Robert were all members. The only one missing is the extraordinary Dave Pye on bass and vocals. Robert joined in on a song that the Limos used to do hence his shinng presense in this picture. Thank you Robert.

Thank you Merton
Thank you ball boys
------------------------------------
I like the passage down the side of the stage at the GP. The light at the end gives it a warm feel. And here comes Dan, rolling up his sleeves ready to slay the audience with his wit, his singing and, of course, his brilliant guitar.
.jpg)
We finally got ourselves organised and started playing. A bit of a change of positions on stage but we made it work, I think. Interesting mirror on the right.
.jpg)
This next photo shows the mirror in action. We have the reflection of Dan and Harpo with two Diners looking on. Many thanks to Rhonda Riding for taking these pictures. She is a great fan who has been to more of our gigs than anyone except us.
.jpg)
And finally a shot of the man, Dan, with a look I have described as pensive but maybe it's more like the look that sees right inside you.

Sadly, Dan's Diner didn't play at the Springwood Spring Festival because our drummer, Dave, was ill and couldn't make it and there was no time to organise a replacemet. So sorry if you came and were disappointed by our absence. The weather wasn't very good but the festival went ahead and lots of people did brave the rain and, so we hear, had a great time.Friday 16th September at the Merton Hotel
On Friday 16th September 2022 we are playing at The Merton Hotel, 38 Victoria Rd, Rozelle, 8:00-11:00pm.This is another new venue for us and is just down the road from The Native Rose where we played a few weeks ago. It look like a great little inner city venue looking at their web page.

Dan's Diner are playing at the Springwood Spring Festival on Saturday at 12 noon for 45 minutes. This used to be called Springwood Foundation Day. I believe the parade no longer happens due to the cost of insurance but there will be plenty of stalls selling food, clothes, plants and much more. Always a great day out.Posted Monday 29th August, 2022
We had a great gig at Truck Bar, Brookvale on Saturday night. The place was jumping but the photo below was taken as we were setting up and before the jumping.
Phil has purchased some new speakers and this was their first time out and they were great. Really clear sound and excellent quality. We played well, had a lot of fun. Nev and Jonno and the rest of the staff did a great job looking after us and the punters, food and drinks were fabulous.

The sound was much better than I thought it would be. The high ceiling and huge beer vats somehow worked in our favour. Who would have thought. We are back there on Friday, 18th November.

27th August at Truck Bar, Brookvale
We have a gig at another new venue for us in the northen beaches. Truck Bar @ 4 Pines Brewery Co. It is a real brewery at:4F/9-13 Winbourne Rd, Brookvale. It's a little difficult to find but listen for the music and you should be fine. We've heard really good things about this venue and so we are looking forward to it.
The Friday night gig at Miss Celie's went very well. Lot's of people, lovely food and atmosphere. Many thanks to Paulo, the man in charge, who made our life very easy and was extremely helpful at all times
.jpg)
The performance area is quite snug and we didn't quite fit on the Persian rug. It was a rather a small rug. And not even Persion.
This pic is from the outside, obviously, and there were many people eating out there but they all turned and looked at me as I took the photo so I chopped their heads off. Splendidly pink, I think.
.jpg)
My arms aren't long enough to do a decent selfie of the band and our official photographer couldn't make it so this is the best I could do. Dan was a blur he was setting up so fast but you get the idea.
.jpg)
All in all a great evening.
Sadly, the next gig did not go so well. Dan lost his voice at the end of the last set on Friday and hence we had to cancel the gig at the Gasoline Pony on Saturday. He described his voice as being somewhere between Tiny Tim and a mafiosa. Luckily it was only his voice in this situation. So Rhonda and I went and had a cup of tea at Bygone Beauties in Leura and here I am wearing the obligatory teapot on my head.

And Philip, well he saved his energy and ran in the City to Surf on Sunday and finished without injuring himself, always a plus.
And that was the weekend that was.

We had a great night at the Native Rose last Saturday. Lots of people, friendly staff, we really enjoyed ourselves. Harpo came along and played brilliant harp on several songs which added to the night.

Now you may have noticed that this is election night so there is the possibility, depending on your political leanings, of having a really bad night watching the election or a really great night being entertained by Dan's Diner. I know what I am going to do.
But wait, there's even more...
It's Dan's 39th birthday (again) and he would love to celebrate the day with you, and you and you.
What more can I tempt you with? I don't have any steak knives.
We hope to see you in May.
Cheers, Dan's Diner.
Another great gig at the Gasoline Pony in Marrickville. Many thanks to those who came because we had a great time and we hope you did too. David "Harpo" Moor joined us again and played brilliantly as always.

Great news, we have a gig at a new venue for us, the Native Rose Hotel, Rozelle. This is a great venue with plenty of live music. They have a bistro serving up tasty pub fare and they accept NSW Dine and Discover vouchers as well. They also have raffles, club draws etc. It will be fun to play somewhere new.
The gig at Gasoline Pony went really well with lots of people and some relief from the rain. Dan's Diner did two long sets with a mixture of music from the cd, new originals and old covers. During the second set we were joined by David "Harpo" Moor on, you guessed it, harmonica. He played fabulously on a few blistering songs. So all in all a great afternoon and many thanks to those who did brave the weather and come down and thanks also to those Mardi Gras party goers who called in on their way to the event.

This is an "if you happen to be in the neighbourhood" email. The Diners and I are doing a Saturday afternoon at the Gasoline Pony from 3 to 6 on MARCH 5TH. I've written a bunch of new songs to perform along with our Diners' menu of blues, rock and gospel of the 50's and early 60's. Because of Covid it's $10 a ticket but to make up for that we'll be giving each couple one free DAN'S DINER CD. We would love to see you there.
Tickets...

Surprise, surprise, the Gasoline Pony has postponed all gigs at the start of January due to covid. So our gig on January 8th is postponed until 5th March. It's a pity because we were looking forward to playing live again very much. However, health before fame.Anybody who bought tickets can get a refund through trybooking or the Gasoline Pony and as far as tickets for the March gig, we don't know yet but we will keep you informed.

Meanwhile rehearsals are going well but there is still covid to throw a spaniard into the works.

Northside Radio is an excellent Sydney community radio station on FM99.3 or if you are outside the area or just love digital then they live stream their programs. Home page is https://northsideradio.com.au. I heard many great songs in the the afternoon and one which really grabbed me was "Driving Me Crazy" by Lisa Richards, a Canberra girl I think.
In the lead up to the show, Northside Radio played "Walk Don't Run" by The Ventures which was something I reflected upon because a short time before the interview I fell over while running in the rain and fractured my wrist in several places. But enough about me.
The full show runs between 4pm and 7pm but first the news. Er, no! For some reason the national news link was down and after some silence Jane played "Dan's Diner" by, yes, Dan's Diner: an unprogrammed playing of the title track. Jane also played "Ain't No Rhyme or Reason" later in the first hour.
Finally, at about 6:15pm Dan arrived at Studio One and Jane started the interview by playing Dan's Diner, again. Then Jane and Dan chatted for the next half an hour, interspersed with songs from the album, about Dan coming to Australia, his musical adventures, the new band and more.
Firstly they talked about why Dan's Diner Trio was formed. Dan wanted to play acoustic guitar again in a band small in size but big in sound. Acoustic guitar, bass and cut back drums that could fit, if needs be, on a Persian Rug. Which it does.
They discussed Dan's musical history in which he had good management and a great album, made with Al Ward, which gave him the opportunity to open for acts such as Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Ike and Tina Turner and more.
But after many years of Dan supporting and playing in other bands he wanted his own band again and once he had the trio, it was decided that some original songs were required and so, after many decades, Dan started writing songs again. Jane commented on the lyrics to the songs and described them as beautiful poetry, a statement with which I agree. The lyrics can be read at https://dansdinertrio.bandcamp.com where the songs can be heard and the lyrics read.
They discussed track 2 "America Dream" where Dan described the people he was writing about but made clear he was not a Trumpist. He also discussed possibly his favourite song on the album, "Broken", where he makes a surprising admission as to who the song is about.
They then take a step back and Dan tells of his trip to Australia via the UK, Europe and through Asia bypassing wars and other assorted interruptions arriving three months late for his job teaching German and French (who knew) and being banished to Campbell Town which was not the thriving community it is today.
Dan and Jane discussed how the band is looking forward to playing live again and hopefully to members of the audience from Northside Radio.
The last song Jane played was "The Church of the Sacred Steel". Dan described it as Gospel Music played in the way some American artists play it with the pedal steel replacing the organ as do The Turner Brown Band , a band Dan's Diner opened for at the Vanguard in late 2019.
And so, with some farewells, the interview was over and I think it went very well. I haven't gone into great detail or provided a transcript because I am hoping to get a copy of the interview so you can hear the full story. I don't want to spoil all the surprises.
I have enjoyed listening to the music on Northside Radio and I highly recommend it. Jane's show is on Thursdays at 4pm but you will find plenty of great music all through the week.

DAN'S DINERWEBSITE RELEASE
A note from our facebook page
Hello, followers of Dan's Diner. Do you still remember them? They were last seen furiously finishing the mixing on that album they started about over a year ago. It's about to be mastered which means things should happen much quicker now. We are so confident of its being finished that I started to write a press release.
Looking at the very first description of the group, way back then, I noticed a major change. We are evolving from a covers band into an originals one. All songs on the album are ours and were written over the last year.
We are still that 3-piece group with acoustic slide, bass and simple drum set up with a full sound who can fit neatly on a Persian rug with its roots in the blues, rock 'n roll and gospel songs of the 40's and 50's. The music on this album retains the simplicity and spirit of that era but with lyrics that are, very much, about today.
We'll let you know more soon.
Cheers, Dan Johnson
Monday 23rd March, 2020
We have discontinued our album with the previous mixer. There are several resons. One is that we aren't hearing the sound we want to hear. Secondly, we haven't had as much input into the mixes as we would like and thirdly we were being rushed to make decisions which we weren't happy with so we killed it.Now we have decided to take over the mixing ourselves working on the idea that we may not have the history and experience of mixing as some but we do know what we want.
Saturday, March 21st 2020
Tim and Janne have given me an opportunity to plug our Dan's Diner Album due very soon. Thanks to Dom Turner and the Brown girls for giving us the gig and thanks to Tim and Janne for our first live review. They have been following my Artist/Performer/ Challenge these last 10 days. For those that don't know, The Turner Brown Band is Dom Turner (Backsliders), Nikki D Brown, Gloria Brown and Tomika Webb. The band combines Dom's blues with Nikki's "Sacred Steel" lap-slide playing and gospel singing supported by sister Gloria on rhythm guitar and cousin Tomika on drums. The girls all come from the US of A (Ohio I believe) making this a fabulous international musical mix of gospel and blues which will blow your minds. And can Nikki and the girls sing? They are amazing.
